Insomnia is a common medical complaint chracterized by the inability to get a sufficient amount sleep at night. This could be due to difficulty falling asleep or trouble staying asleep for an appropriate amount of time. Individuals with insomnia may also have fatigue or anxiety during the day due to lack of quality sleep during the night.

  • trouble falling asleep
  • trouble staying asleep
  • waking feeling unrefreshed

There are several very common problems that can rob you of a satisfying night’s sleep…

#1: Brain over firing – An area in the brain known as the Mesencephalon can be over firing. The mesencephalon is a small area partly responsible for keeping you awake (don’t worry about this big word just what it does). The mesencephalon should be firing at its highest during the day and at the lowest in the middle of the night. If this “wakefulness” area of the brain is over-firing you will often wake up throughout the night. Oh, by the way, those with a high firing mesencephalon often have chronic pain. Let’s face it…when you sleep…you heal and just feel recharged. If your brain doesn’t know how to slow down and drift into dreamland (and stay there all night), you could be facing more problems than just poor sleep. In addition over half of people with insomnia also have Restless Legs Syndrome.  Why? Because insomnia and restless leg legs are very oftem caused by the same part of the brain that is over-firing.

#2: Brain Chemistry - Chemicals in the brain called Neurotransmitters make up our brain chemistry. Some are “excitatory” that help us stay alert and others are “inhibitory” that allow us to relax and sleep. Imbalances of your brain chemistry may be the cause of your insomnia. I use neurotransmitter testing specifically designed to assess the biochemical imbalances that may be contributing to sleep difficulties. Once these imbalances are determined, a custum made amino acid formulation will be made available to naturally correct the imbalances without the use of any medication.

#2: Exhausted Adrenal Glands - (small hormone producing glands on top of your kidneys) may not be working properly. If your adrenal glands don’t produce enough cortisol, your blood sugar can drop too low causing you to wake up. Too much cortisol will interfere with the neurotransmitter serotonin, causing insomnia, as well as other health problems.

#3: Hormones imbalances - (Thyroid, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and others) can play havoc with your sleep patterns and must be evaluated as part of a comprehensive approach.

#4: Inflammation - It is now understood that insomnia may be caused or influenced by chronic inflammatory issues. The root causes of inflammation including infections, food sensitivities, metabolic and digestive issues, Immune system dysfunction, toxins, heavy metal toxicity, and intestinal permeability should be evaluated in relation to sleep difficulties.

#5: Blood Sugar - Another huge cause of insomnia is unstable blood sugar. Spikes and valleys in your blood sugar and insulin will sabotage your best efforts to get sleep. You’ll just wake up in the middle the night…and again…and again.

Thought about trying sleep medication?  Think again!

Many individuals with sleep difficulties are currently taking a variety of prescription medications to assist with sleep. Most of these medications work by altering brain signaling via neurotransmitter modulation. Not getting enough sleep is one of the worst things that could happen to you. It makes you feel and act like someone you’re not. It’s tempting just to take a pill you’ve seen on TV and hope for the best. But these medications have serious side effects, can be addictive, and for many people the pills just don’t work anymore.
